From One Family to Another
Behind every exceptional cup of coffee is a story that begins long before the roast. It starts in the early hours of the morning, high in the mountains where coffee farmers rise before dawn to care for the land that sustains both their families and their craft.
Have you ever stopped to think about how many lives a single cup of coffee touches before it reaches your kitchen table?
Coffee is one of the few things you’ll find in nearly every corner of the world. Much of it begins in what is known as the Coffee Belt, a region that circles the globe between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn where coffee has been cultivated for generations.
From the mountains of Colombia and the hillsides of Brazil to the highlands of Ethiopia and the ancient coffee-growing regions of Yemen, coffee has become part of countless cultures and traditions. Yet behind every culture, every tradition, and every cup of coffee, there is a story.
More often than not, that story begins with a family.
• Families who rise before the sun and work the land season after season.
• Families who pass down knowledge, traditions, and stewardship from one generation to the next.
Long before coffee reaches a roaster, a coffee shop, or a kitchen table, it begins in the hands of people who have dedicated their lives to cultivating something worth sharing. Different countries, different languages, different customs. Yet the story remains remarkably familar. People caring for their families. Families caring for the land. Communities built around something larger than themselves.
It is perhaps one of the reasons coffee has become woven into cultures around the world.
In Italy, people gather around café counters.
In Yemen, coffee is rooted in centuries of hospitality and tradition.
In Ethiopia, coffee ceremonies bring families and communities together through conversation and reflection, while across America, coffee waits on kitchen counters, front porches, and dining room tables before the day begins.
Different countries, different traditions, yet coffee continues to play a remarkably similar role.
It brings people together.
Recently, while selecting the first coffee for our Explorer Series, we discovered something that felt very familiar.
Our Farmers in Brazil.
Our Brazil coffee is sourced from four farms in the Minas Gerais region: Boa Vista, Fazenda Furnas, Mato Cipo, and Apostolo Simao. Each farm is operated by families who have dedicated themselves to growing coffee with care, quality, and pride.
As Dori and I learned more about the families behind our Brazil coffee, we couldn’t help but see a reflection of our own journey.
While our story is different, the values feel familiar: family, hard work, hospitality, and creating something worth sharing.
As we begin this next chapter with The Roasted Lantern, we’re excited not only for the coffee we’ll share, but for the people we’ll meet, the stories we’ll hear, and the connections still waiting to be made.
Coffee has always been about people.
A family grows the coffee. Another family roasts the coffee. A family opens a café and welcomes their community through its doors. And yet another family shares stories around a kitchen table, celebrating new beginnings or simply gathering after a long day.
Somewhere along the journey, a coffee cherry is picked on a hillside in Brazil, passes through countless hands, crosses oceans and borders, and eventually finds its way into a home, a coffee shop, or a conversation. What began as the work of one family becomes part of the story of another. Perhaps that’s what makes coffee so remarkable. Not simply the distance it travels. But the people it connects along the way.
From the farming families of the Coffee Belt, to the roasting families who craft each batch, to the café owners who create places for people to gather, to the families sitting around their own tables, every cup tells a story of connection.
A story that spans generations, crosses cultures, and reminds us we have more in common than we often realize.

But what inspires us even more are the moments that happen around it.
The conversations. The laughter. The friendships. The stories.
The simple moments that often seem ordinary while we’re living them, yet become the memories we carry forever.
We believe life moves fast.
Too fast sometimes.
And perhaps that’s why these moments matter so much. That’s why our mission isn’t simply to roast coffee. It’s to create opportunities to slow down, gather together, and enjoy the people around us. Because in the end, the coffee isn’t really the point.
The people are.
The lantern is lit.
